"Tantra Spa opened 2 years before my son Levi was born and he will be 16 in a few months. He has been there through the good and the not so good, and has always been a bright light and a positive motivator. I am grateful to have owned the spa for as long as I have and to have him see all the benefits of being self employed: freedom, spending more time together as a family, being around for him after school and never missing a soccer game."
"I opened The Red Hook when Henry was 18 months old, and have learned how to be a better boss and a better mom in the 9 years we've been open. I've admitted to and learned from my mistakes, learned to ask for help, learned to be flexible and trusting and accepted a lot of responsibility for the health and well being of the 30 families that work for me. Henry has watched me work hard and is my biggest cheerleader and critic. I'M proud to show him what running a small business looks like. "
“When the kids were small, owning my business gave me the freedom to be with them. Sometimes balancing Mom and Boss is still tricky with the kids as teens. The greatest gift is the kids witnessing me chase down a dream, while helping them chase down theirs.”
"I've been the Director of Ferndale Parks and Recreation for over 3 years and a mom for over 4 years. My son is my biggest cheerleader and motivator. The joy I'm able to bring to him from our interactions and outings fuels my vision for the different programs and experiences our department brings to the Ferndale community."
"For career dress up day, my older daughter dressed up as a 'boss'. She chose her outfit, and put a baby carrier on with a doll...'now I'm a boss' she said. That sums up how I feel about being a boss mom. I'm directly changing the narrative from one of obstacle, to one of resource. Being a mom has only propelled my passion, tenacity, drive, and clarity about my business and my goals. I couldn't imagine doing this without my daughters as my muses and mirrors. "
"Modern Natural Baby celebrates moms every single day! We started this store in 2009 because as a new mom because I needed a store like this to exist. A place to get the things I wanted for my own children - cloth diapers, wood toys, baby carriers, etc. Moms all over metro-Detroit have helped me grow the store into what it is today and we couldn't be more grateful."
"We started ROUGE 10 years ago in part because after a career of extensive travel, I wanted to be closer to home for my daughter. She was almost 6 and getting ready to start 1st grade. Now, she’s 15 and a Sophomore in high school. She’s grown up in our family business. She has been alongside my Sister and I as we’ve gone through every stage of our business; the growth, triumphs and the struggles. She thinks it’s perfectly normal to start a business from scratch and that there’s nothing she can’t do. I am grateful to our community for embracing us and allowing us to flourish all together. What a great way to grow up!"
"Becoming a mother has been the best thing for my business. Time stretches and contracts in amazing new ways and it makes you more creative than ever. Having a child unlocks a secret community that was all around you but invisible until now. My daughter makes me more grounded, powerful and driven everyday. "
"Motherhood has made me evolve as a business owner. I have grown to appreciate the flexibility it gives me to be there for my kids. After all these years I think I’ve found the sweet spot to juggle it all. I cherish this time in my life; being able dedicate myself to my helping others and teach my kids how important that is!"
"I spend so much time working as a self-employed business owner and my schedule is unpredictable. I often wonder if I dedicate too much time to work. I now see my 6 year old, Elliott, pretending to be a business owner himself. That reassured me that I am being the best role model to him by simply following my dreams!"
"You give a lot as a parent and as a business owner, but they are both things that can give a lot to you too. As a mother, I have learned so much about taking what you can from the present moment, and being flexible enough to adjust when it inevitably changes—and that’s important when running your own business too. My kids help me remember why I do this, which helps me be more intentional in everything I do."
"My daughter couldn't get away with any shenanigans. She has put up with me volunteering her over the years for many annoying tasks. Tables have turned though and these past few years she has become a favorite server at Bobcat Bonnie's and I have become known as Rebecca's mom."
"I started as the Director of the Ferndale Downtown Development Authority in October 2019 when Myra was less than a year old. Now we've got another on the way and I couldn't feel more energized to support this community through this challenging time. I want to help make Ferndale even better for my kids!"
